Act 3 notes

Act 3 first half

Mercutio, Benvolio and Romeo meet Tybalt on their way. Tybalt keeps asking Romeo to fight him but Romeo rejects to do so. Mercutio however, is angered by the provoking and Romeo’s softness, then he fights Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio accidentally and then runs away. Mercutio’s death has immediately stimulated Romeo, his anger makes him lost his mind, eventually kills Tybalt. The whole city’s police start to arrest Romeo. Therefore Romeo escapes to the city next to Verona. Nurse tells Juliet about the death of her cousin, but Juliet does not care about him at all, she only cares about Romeo.

In the first three scenes, the relationships between characters are the most interesting part.

Mercutio and Romeo: Mercutio cares about Romeo and he sacrifice his life just for Romeo

Tybalt and Juliet: relationship between these two characters can be even described as strangers, they have totally opposite personalities, one is pugnacious and violent, the other one is kind and peaceful. Juliet does not care about Tybalt’s death at all.

Nurse and Juliet: when Nurse starts cursing to Romeo, Juliet is immediately angered by nurse. However, this won’t affect their relationship negatively.
