The characters we chose were Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Tybalt, Friar Lawrence, nurse, Prince, Paris, Lady Capulet, and Benvolio. All these characters play significant roles in the play, they are all responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death. Each of them represents a main theme in the play.  Romeo holds letter Friar Lawrence wrote him. This prop represents the theme of fate and destiny and also love. Romeo never gets the letter from Friar Lawrence, which emphasizes that his death is unchangable. When he is holding the letter, he should kneel on the ground which shows the power of fate that brings him to death, and also shows that he still hopes to be with Juliet and the whole plan comes true, which shows the theme of love. Juliet holds a Kaleidoscope. The Kaleidoscope represents Juliet’s changes through the play. At first she is innocent and shy, but toward the end if the play she becomes independent and brave, these changes can be perfectly portrayed by the color changing i...

ACT 5

First half of Act 5 Romeo hears the news that Juliet is dead and becomes extremely upset. Clearly he did not get the letter from Friar Lawrence. Romeo buys a poison and decides to die beside Juliet’s body. Friar Lawrence asks Friar John wether Romeo gets the letter or not, and Friar John tells him Romeo did not get the letter, Friar Lawrence knows that their plan has gone wrong.  In this part of the play, religious imagery is used to show Romeo’s upset emotion and his live toward Juliet.  ‘Then I defy you, stars.’ Stars are supposed to mean fortune and love in this book, but Romeo says he defies the stars, which shows that he is extremely upset about Juliet’s ‘death’ Act  5 scene 1 also uses foreshadowing, in the beginning of the scene, Romeo says he dreamed last night how Juliet stands next to his dead body and kiss him. Ironically this sweet dream turns into a tragedy of their death. The foreshadowing is used to empathize the theme of fate and destiny....

In the book of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ the remarkable death of Romeo and Juliet has eventually made the peace between two families. However, who should be responsible for their death?  In my opinion the person should be Tybalt. Tybalt, the most pugnacious character in the play, picks up some significant fights throughout the play. His aggressiveness would be the main factor that causes the death. For instance, in act 1 scene 1 when Benvolio tries to end the conflict, Tybalt says ‘Peace, I hate the word.’ From This quote we can see that Tybalt does not want to end the grudge, all he wants is more conflict. Also if he does not kill Mercutio, Romeo wouldn’t kill him and be chased by police and eventually forced to kill himself. To sum up,  Tybalt’s ambition of killing more people causes the death of Romeo and Juliet.

Rest of Act 3

Rest of Act 3 After the consideration and the discussion with Lady Capulet and Paris, Lord Capulet decides to move the wedding ahead, so Juliet and Paris are going to marry in three days. Lord Capulet asks Lady Capulet to inform Juliet the marriage. However, Juliet does not agree with the marriage and refuse to meet Paris. Lord Capulet is pissed by Juliet’s rejection and gives Juliet a ultimatum that she either marries Paris or get ejected out of the family.  When Lord Capulet slaps Juliet, nurse advises Juliet to marry Paris for her own good. However, Juliet feels betrayed by nurse since the nurse does not support her. From Juliet’s reaction to the nurse, we can see that Juliet is mature and childish because she does not listen even though the nurse is trying to help. But at the meantime, this shows how strong the love between Romeo and Juliet is.  Character evaluation: I think the most interesting character in this part should be Lord Capulet. He shows t...

Les Miserable

Les Miserable  On October 11, I watched the movie ‘Les Miserable’ by Victor Hugo on YouTube.  The story is  basically about a man Jean Valjean after 19years of being slave (because he stole a bread to feed his dying sister) he is real see from a French prison. However no places are willing to hire him since he is an ex-convict. After he is inspired by the god father and starts to believe in god, he took 8 years become a mayor. Javert, the police chief, recognizes Jean Valjean since they have talked in the prison. Jean Valjean meets woman named Fantine who has a 13 year old daughter Cosette and decides to adopt her.  Th after 9 years, French Revolution has started in Paris which is where Jean Valjean and his daughter live. Cosette is immediately in love with one of the patriots Marius. The revolution has failed, but fortunately Marius is saved by Jean Valjean. Marius eventually marries Cosette, then Jean Valjean dies peacefully. This play has several themes inclu...

In class writing

In act 3 scene 1, Tybalt kills Mercutio when Mercutio is trying to protect Romeo. Tybalt should be responsible for Mercutio’s death. Tybalt, the king of cats, is the most pugnacious character is this whole play, he hates Montague deeply and wish them all die. In order to show how violent he is, in  act 1 scene 1 he says ‘peace, I hate the word.’. This quote separate Tybalt from other Capulets, others just want to end the war, however Tybalt does not, he wants to keep the war on as if he is born for it. Therefore, Tybalt should be responsible for Mercutio’s death, since he is the only aggressive character in this scene, and also he is the one who uses the sword to kill Mercutio. Act 3 scene 1 as the turning point of the play should be staged differently from the other scenes. First of all, in order to show the audience the fight scene more closely, all actors should be standing on down part which is close to the audience. In order to portray Mercutio’s death more tragic, th...

Act 3 notes

Act 3 first half Mercutio, Benvolio and Romeo meet Tybalt on their way. Tybalt keeps asking Romeo to fight him but Romeo rejects to do so. Mercutio however, is angered by the provoking and Romeo’s softness, then he fights Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio accidentally and then runs away. Mercutio’s death has immediately stimulated Romeo, his anger makes him lost his mind, eventually kills Tybalt. The whole city’s police start to arrest Romeo. Therefore Romeo escapes to the city next to Verona. Nurse tells Juliet about the death of her cousin, but Juliet does not care about him at all, she only cares about Romeo. In the first three scenes, the relationships between characters are the most interesting part. Mercutio and Romeo: Mercutio cares about Romeo and he sacrifice his life just for Romeo Tybalt and Juliet: relationship between these two characters can be even described as strangers, they have totally opposite personalities, one is pugnacious and violent, the othe...

Friar Lawrence as one of the most significant characters in the book ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is described as a peacemaker. He is in a neutral position which is in involved in any conflict between the two families. In order to show his characteristics, Shakespeare uses variety of techniques. To begin with, the first time Friar Lawrence enters the scene is in act2 scene 3. Friar Lawrence is alone in his cell holding a basket of flowers. The unique setting of his entrance emphasizes that he is a quiet, peaceful and friendly type o person. The purpose of the basket of flowers is the symbolism of peace.  Friar Laurence is religious. He believes Romeo and Juliet's marriage will unite them in the eyes of God and therefore put an end to the conflict between the two families. In act one scene 3 when he talks to Romeo about the acceptance of the marriage, he says ‘Till holy church incorporate two in one’ . This quote shows how religious Friar Lawrence is and how he believes that through ...

There are several ways that can show that Capulet and Montague is of similar classes and status. Firstly, appropriate staging can show their status. Both Capulet and Montague can stand on the same levels on stage, up, down and center. So that there will not be any level difference showed on stage. Secondly, in order to show that both families are wealthy and powerful, the way they express their body language should be the same, they all should stand straight.  However there are some differences between the two families. Different types of costumes would show the difference. For instance, in the film version, Montagues’ costumes are more toward to Florida beach clothes, but Capulet’s costumes are more likely to be suits. The contract between the colors of clothes can also show the difference. Capulet’s dark color shows that their families is prudent, and Montague’s clothe’s color and bright, which emphasizes that they are more friendly. Despite the design of plays, acting can ...

Act2 notes

Romeo and Juliet and both fall in love deeply. Romeo comes to balcony and meets Juliet. They promised each other that they will get married, and Juliet tells Romeo that she will send someone to discuss about the marriage. The person who Juliet sends is nurse, since she is her only trustful person. They decide to get married very soon. Then Romeo comes to see his friend but also tutor Friar Lawrence, and asks him to minted their marriage. Friar Lawrence at first rejects to do this but then he thinks that this might be a turning point, which can end the ancient grudge, so he agrees.  Then right the next day they marry. Balcony as one of the most important scene in the whole story, uses a lot of different techniques. Religious imagery ‘O, speak again bright angel.’                              ‘Juliet is the sun.’                  Juliet’s famous quote...
