ACT 5

First half of Act 5

Romeo hears the news that Juliet is dead and becomes extremely upset. Clearly he did not get the letter from Friar Lawrence. Romeo buys a poison and decides to die beside Juliet’s body. Friar Lawrence asks Friar John wether Romeo gets the letter or not, and Friar John tells him Romeo did not get the letter, Friar Lawrence knows that their plan has gone wrong.

In this part of the play, religious imagery is used to show Romeo’s upset emotion and his live toward Juliet.
‘Then I defy you, stars.’
Stars are supposed to mean fortune and love in this book, but Romeo says he defies the stars, which shows that he is extremely upset about Juliet’s ‘death’

Act  5 scene 1 also uses foreshadowing, in the beginning of the scene, Romeo says he dreamed last night how Juliet stands next to his dead body and kiss him. Ironically this sweet dream turns into a tragedy of their death. The foreshadowing is used to empathize the theme of fate and destiny.
