Lit and Performance

In December 14, I watched the film version of ‘glass Menagerie’ in Ms.Guarino’s classroom. The film basically tells a story of a poor family in Saint Louis that the father left, so there are only the mother Amanda, daughter Laura, and the son Tom. Tom’s dream is to become a writer, but the poor condition and his mother’s restrictions keep him from chasing the dream. Until one day Tom brings his friend Jim to his house, who is from Laura’s high school. Laura admired Jim since high school, but Jim is already engaged, Therefore Laura gives her favorite glass Menagerie to Jim as a gift, then Tom leaves the house and starts to chase his dream. There are multiple themes in this movie, including love, dream, poverty, hate and hope. In one of these many, in my opinion the most interesting one would be hope, since there are multiple symbolism for it. Tom ‘Rise and shine’ another morning started by my mom’s annoying line. I dress up and go to work in the warehouse. Thanks god my friend Jim was there so that I had someone to talk to. After the work I went to movie as usual until midnight. When I was just about to go into the door, I look to the fire escape, moon light seems so bright which is the opposite to my future. The next day I heard from mom that Laura hadn’t gone to the school for a long time, I kind of got why she did not go, she is probably tired of trying so hard in a poor condition. However, I started to worried about the future of this family, what will happen if I leave?  Finally, the argument that should have happened a long time ago happened today, I am tired of keep listen to her nonsense and her ‘science’ I don’t feel sorry for nothing I did today, it was right. Maybe I will get to leave the house. However I’m feeling sorry for breaking Laura’s glass menageries... After a few days, I apologized ...

How does Laura use language to show that she does not like the current condition of the family? Why does Amanda still puts the picture of her husband on the wall, if she hates him? Does Jim like Betty more or Laura? What will the life of Amanda be after Tom leave. Who will Laura be married to? How does Jim use his language to show his love to Laura? What will the color of lighting be when Tom and Amanda argue? What kind of costumes should Tom wear in order to represent his ambition to become a writer? How will the life of Tom be after he leaves? Will Tomever visit Amanda again, and does Amanda feel regret?

Tom: The arguement between him and his mother.           He invited Jim to the dinner.           He tells Amanda that he is sick of the life he has.           He did not pay the electronic bill, instead paid the merchant.           He evantaully leaves the house by saying goodbye to Laura. Tom:  As one of the main characters, Tom is being overly controlled by his mother Amanda, since she is fearing that Tom will leave her just like his father. Tom is desperately hoping to get out of his mother’s control. When Amanda is keep talking and annoying him, he eventually gets pissed by her, then he says ‘look mother, I haven’t got a thing, not a single thing left in this house that I can call my own.’ From This quote we can see that Tom is a type of person who wants freedom. He is tired of listening to his mother’s nagging. He wants to get out of this situation really bad. Amanda: After her husband left her alone with two children, and she becomes older and older,  Amanda’s only hope to make her life better is her daughter Laura. She sends her to a typing school, and hope Laura can learn something.
