Tom:
 As one of the main characters, Tom is being overly controlled by his mother Amanda, since she is fearing that Tom will leave her just like his father. Tom is desperately hoping to get out of his mother’s control. When Amanda is keep talking and annoying him, he eventually gets pissed by her, then he says ‘look mother, I haven’t got a thing, not a single thing left in this house that I can call my own.’ From This quote we can see that Tom is a type of person who wants freedom. He is tired of listening to his mother’s nagging. He wants to get out of this situation really bad.

Amanda:
After her husband left her alone with two children, and she becomes older and older,  Amanda’s only hope to make her life better is her daughter Laura. She sends her to a typing school, and hope Laura can learn something. However, after she finds out that Laura has not been going to school for a long time, she becomes depressed, then she says ‘I just wanted to find a hole in the ground and crawl in it and stay there the rest of my entire life.’ From This quote we can clearly see that the harsh reality really makes her disappointed. Her wish is to escape from the reality, just like all the other characters but in a different form.

Laura:

Laura, unlike the other two characters in the play, is a shy and introverted character. She has a broken leg and is forced to get married. The lady in the typing school describes her as ‘a terribly shy little girl who dropped out of school after a few days’ attendance.’ Because of the disability, lack of the role of father and the poor condition, she always tries to escape from the harsh reality.

MLML reading notes Chapter 3-5

Continue from the previous chapter, Desiree eventually finds a young man who is injured from the accident, whose name is Daniel. She sees a broken car, which at that time she had no idea what it is. To comfort Daniel, Desiree sings a song and then other peasants from the village appear. They bring Daniel back to their place and look after him. At the meantime, Desiree thinks that all this is fate, it is the will of God that brought this man to their place. Apparently, Daniel is from the wealthy part, but he does not tell them what his specific identity is. Peasants send M.J and M.B to the city to find someone. After a few days, M.J and M.B come back. There is a storm. Mama Euralie has a mental breakdown and starts to curse at God about her life; she also worries that one-day Desiree will leave the village and never comes back.
