Review

In December 14, I watched the film version of ‘glass Menagerie’ in Ms.Guarino’s classroom. The film basically tells a story of a poor family in Saint Louis that the father left, so there are only the mother Amanda, daughter Laura, and the son Tom. Tom’s dream is to become a writer, but the poor condition and his mother’s restrictions keep him from chasing the dream. Until one day Tom brings his friend Jim to his house, who is from Laura’s high school. Laura admired Jim since high school, but Jim is already engaged, Therefore Laura gives her favorite glass Menagerie to Jim as a gift, then Tom leaves the house and starts to chase his dream. There are multiple themes in this movie, including love, dream, poverty, hate and hope. In one of these many, in my opinion the most interesting one would be hope, since there are multiple symbolism for it.

The staging in the scene is pretty simple, a typical family with lots of tea cups and and pictures as decoration. The picture of the father is hanging on a high position, it’s purpose is to show that Amanda actually still misses her husband and hopes he can come back, partially because she misses him, another reason is to save the family from the poor condition. There are some symbolism used in the film. For instance, when Amanda, Laura and Tom are drinking tea, the tea cups they use are very beautiful, which does not match their current financial condition. This prop symbolizes the theme of hope, they try to use everything nice to make them feel like they live in a good condition so that they will forget the reality, this also means that they don’t want to face to the harsh reality. Another compelling prop used to represent hope, is when Laura gives the horn of glass unicorn to Jim, it means that she eventually gives up her unreal dream of glass Menagerie and the love to Jim. In my opinion, Amanda is the best character to represent the theme of hope. She always talks to Laura and Tom about her wonderful past, she really hopes to go back to the past, which is totally the opposite of her current situation. Also from how she always want Laura to get married with a man who is not addicted to alcohol , this means she hopes her daughter won’t get through what she has gone through, which is having a husband who is heavily addicted to alcohol. Throughout the whole film, my favorite actor and character would be Tom. Character wise, he is ambitious and rational. He knows that working at the warehouse will never be enough, he knows he should go chase his dream which is to be a writer. He is a good brother who always tries to take care of his sister and still misses her when he leaves. Actor wise, the actor did really will to portray a panicking emotion when Tom is arguing with Amanda. He opens his eyes really big and rise the volume of his voice, with exaggerated body language.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed watching the film version of ‘Glass Menagerie’. The theme of hope really inspired me to keep chasing my dream no matter what. Also the film version helps me to understand the script and even the whole story better. Overall, it was such a great experience.
