Friar Lawrence as one of the most significant characters in the book ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is described as a peacemaker. He is in a neutral position which is in involved in any conflict between the two families. In order to show his characteristics, Shakespeare uses variety of techniques.

To begin with, the first time Friar Lawrence enters the scene is in act2 scene 3. Friar Lawrence is alone in his cell holding a basket of flowers. The unique setting of his entrance emphasizes that he is a quiet, peaceful and friendly type o person. The purpose of the basket of flowers is the symbolism of peace.

Friar Laurence is religious. He believes Romeo and Juliet's marriage will unite them in the eyes of God and therefore put an end to the conflict between the two families. In act one scene 3 when he talks to Romeo about the acceptance of the marriage, he says ‘Till holy church incorporate two in one’ . This quote shows how religious Friar Lawrence is and how he believes that through marriage Montague and Capulet households will be united which ends the ancient grudge. Also when Romeo kills Tybalt, Friar Lawrence immediately suggests him to leave the city of Verona in order to avoid more conflict, he as a wise character makes a right choice which stops the police to kill him immediately.

The most compelling point is that Friar Lawrence as in a neutral position who does not work for any households and even police, he always tries his best to end the conflict. He wouldn’t earn anything if he puts in effort, he does it just for his own belief and god. His religious thinking is also one of the reason why he wants to end the war. In conclusion, I agree that Friar Lawrence is a peacemaker by using the evidence above. Even though eventually both Romeo and Juliet die but still, the ancient grudge has ended.
