In class writing

In act 3 scene 1, Tybalt kills Mercutio when Mercutio is trying to protect Romeo. Tybalt should be responsible for Mercutio’s death. Tybalt, the king of cats, is the most pugnacious character is this whole play, he hates Montague deeply and wish them all die. In order to show how violent he is, in  act 1 scene 1 he says ‘peace, I hate the word.’. This quote separate Tybalt from other Capulets, others just want to end the war, however Tybalt does not, he wants to keep the war on as if he is born for it. Therefore, Tybalt should be responsible for Mercutio’s death, since he is the only aggressive character in this scene, and also he is the one who uses the sword to kill Mercutio.

Act 3 scene 1 as the turning point of the play should be staged differently from the other scenes. First of all, in order to show the audience the fight scene more closely, all actors should be standing on down part which is close to the audience. In order to portray Mercutio’s death more tragic, the color of lighting should be red, which deeply marks the turning point that the theme of the play change from Romantic to tragic. In addition, maybe putting a block on stage could be a good idea, when Tybalt enters, he can stand on the block and talk to Romeo, at this point, the level between them is shown, since Tybalt wants to fight him but Romeo is hesitating. When Mercutio is dead, he should lay right on the down center which makes his death more memorable and remarkable.
