Proposal

The scene I choose for the adaptation is from Act 3 scene 5 when Lord Capulet enters to see Juliet and Lady Capulet and how their conversation is going about marriage with Paris, then Lord Capulet realizes that Juliet does not want to marry Paris, so he slaps her and threat her.

The story is about two companies Coca Cola and Pepsi are both trying to get the recipe for a new flavor of coke from a chemical company. The boss of Coca Cola (Lord Coca Cola) wants his daughter to marry the son of the chemical company in order to get the recipe. However what the boss of Coca Cola does not know is that his daughter is already in love with the son of the boss of Pepsi. My design is the scene when the boss of Coca Cola argues with his daughter about marriage, and how he threats her to do so.

In total, there are three characters in the scene, they are the boss, daughter and boss’s wife. The scene starts with a monologue by the daughter, which is about how she is thinking of the son of Lord Pepsi. The daughter should sit in the position of down-left with an calm and please emotion since they have decided to marry right the next day. Then her mother Lady Coca Cola comes in and sit next to the daughter and start convincing her to marry the son of the chemical company, she did not mention about the recipe, she only talks about how nice and handsome he is. However, Lady Coca Cola accidentally mentions about the recipe. The daughter becomes sad and nervous, she asks to see her father and discuss about the marriage. The Lord Coca Cola comes in, the daughter says she appreciates him but she does not want to marry. Lord Coca Cola gets mad and slaps her angrily, and he threats her that if she does not marry the son of the chemical company, she will be banished from the family. Then Lord Coca Cola turns to Lady Coca Cola and says how useless she is that she can’t even finish this simple task. The daughter cries madly and the scene ends with the daughter kneeling on the stage begging her father.

There are several staging strategies that can be used in order to improve the quality of the performance. The color of lighting could change from white to dark red when Lord Coca Cola comes in and warm his daughter. The white light symbolizes the daughter’s love to Lord Pepsi’s son and also her innocent personality.  The dark red represents her father’s over-control of her and her fear of being banished from the family. In addition, it would be better if there can be a slow and lovely background music played when the daughter is reading her monologue, since the monologue is about her love, this shows how pure  and real her love is to the son of Lord Pepsi.
