Romeo and Juliet review
Romeo and Juliet review
On October I watched the modern version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, directed by Baz Luhrmann, in school. The play basically tells the story that both two families’ so and daughter Romeo and Juliet meet in a ball and immediately in love with each other, they decide to marry but due to the conflict between two families p, they eventually suicide and the death of the couple ends the conflict.
The Baz Luhrmann version of Romeo and Juliet is filmed around a beach in California, the sunshine and the warm weather makes the city really attractive. The setting in the movie is unique, the two family buildings are facing to each other and between the two buildings, there is a huge statue of god. This set if staging is really effective because it shows the theme of fate and destiny. Also the staging shows the high power the two families have in the city of Verona, the buildings are built right in the center of Verona. Not like the original version reading the prologue, the Baz Luhrmann version reads the prologue two times, the first time is read by a woman in a TV, which tells the audience that this play is told like a story. The second time the prologue is read by the Prince, who is the witness of the whole event, he reads it with deep emotions which shows that this is serious and builds up a heavy tone.
As the modern version, Baz Luhrmann puts a lot of focus on costumes and other daily things in order to match the right time period. For instance, he tends to separate the two families by using different types of clothes, Capulet’s usually wear more formal clothes and Montagues usually wear more casual and beach clothes. Also, instead of using swords and horses, they use guns and cars. Baz Luhrmann uses background music in order to show the different status between people. For instance, the play begins with three Montagues in a gas station, the background music is funky and bad taste, the music type is kind of like hip hop, however, when the scene switches to when Romeo enters, the music switches to ‘lovefool’ by the Cardigans, which the flow is slow and smooth.
Throughout the whole movie, my favorite character would be Romeo acted by Leonardo DiCaprio. Firstly, Leonardo as one of the greatest actors has perfectly portrayed a man is suddenly in love. When he first meets Juliet is the party and sees her, he makes eye contact with her and his facial expression shows me that as if he is looking at an angel, because he looks like he admires Juliet.
Despite the acting part, I also like Romeo as the character himself. Because he uses really beautiful language. For instance, he uses oxymoron when he first enters the movie, which shows his creativity and the depression due to the rejection by Rosaline. Also, he uses lots of religious imagery throughout the play, he calls Juliet angel and relate her to stars and sun in order to portray Juliet’s indescribable beauty.
Baz Luhrmann version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a very different but also stick to the original version. He creates the two families as a gang conflict, however all the lines actors/actresses have are from the original play, Therefore this is really challenging to the actors/actresses to act with the type of language they are not familiar with. The theme of love is perfectly showed in this play. The first sight of love when they are are separated by the water tank really builds up a romantic atmosphere. When Romeo dies in front of Juliet dramatically, Juliet cries with heavy emotions, this part really touches my heart by her acting which is impressive.
In conclusion, Baz Luhrmann version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is really fun to watch and there are lots of his deeper thoughts you can explore. This movie taught me that sometimes a different version of a play can help you develop your creativity better and gives you new ideas of creating drama.
Actors and actress’s acting is tremendous with thoughtful emotions.
