reflection of presentations
What is drama? It is a way of expressing your lifestyle and experience on stage. Throughout the all three classes of listening, learning and taking notes, I was impressed by how the art of drama can be this detailed and interesting. All these theorists have their own thoughts of how to create drama and how to improve your understanding and acting skills. In this essay, I will be focusing on the techniques I learned from presentations and how I can use them on my preparation.
From most of the theorists I learned about, I found out that all these ideas are similar or related to one person’s idea, which is Konstantinos Stanislavsky, one if the most famous directors in the drama history. Therefore, I will start with his techniques. Stanislavsky’s central idea of drama is to relate drama to real life, which is also called naturalism. In order to make the performance more realistic and logical, he created the ‘Magic if’ which is to let the actor asks himself questions that are related to the performance. For instance, in the performance I am going to do (Glass menagerie), Stella as the character of Amanda can ask herself that ‘what would I do if I found out that my daughter has bent lying to me about attending school. This is a very effective technique because instead of creating a new emotion, actor asking himself questions can put him into the situation and he will stimulate by his own thoughts, which accomplish realism. Another compelling technique is Emotional Memory, actor can use his own past and experience according to the similar situation instead of create emotion.
Another famous director’s method that I was impressed by would be Lee Strasberg. Since his method is similar to Stanislavsky’s method, which is to express human nature. His central idea is that actors are allowed to use their imagination, senses and emotions to conceive of characters with unique and original behavior, creating performances grounded in the human truth of the moment. From what Lee Strasberg believes, ‘method acting is what all actors have always done whenever they acted well.’ From his opinion, what acting well simply means using imagination that is related to human nature. This technique can create the characters uniqueness and behavior. Also as a teacher who has taught many famous actors and directors, Strasberg has always been giving them the right instruction, he knows that have fun with students can increase the efficiency of learning. From this I learned that, maybe every time before I start working with my group mates, we can start with a quick fun warmup game, which can improve our speed of creating drama. In addition, I show great respect to Peter Brook’s idea that students should not be learning everything in school, instead, they should methods and actual performances.
In conclusion, what made these directors great is their passions to the art of drama, I learned so many techniques that could potentially be used for my rehearsal and preparation of the performance ‘glass menageries’, and I’m really excited to see the progress after using them.
