1. What story
The combination of ‘the wall of fire rising’ and ‘the night woman’
Scene 1. the story starts with the funeral of Guy; Little Guy stands beside and starts his speech from the performance class. Then Lili should have a monologue that talks about how she knows that her family’s life will struggle because they lost their only financial support.
Scene 2. The story then switch to ‘The night woman’. Lili is forced by the financial plight to be a prostitute and she decides to keep doing it until her child Little Guy finish his education. There is also a dialogue between Lili and her Client.
Scene 3. This scene can be short; Little Guy finally finished his education, and Lili stops doing her job. Happy ending.
2. why is it interesting?
Because it finishes the suspense created at the end of the story 'The wall of fire rising', and smoothly connect the two stories with creativity. It also shows the struggle Haitian women had during that time, which is a key theme Danticat is trying to show. Also, because the original story 'the wall of fire rising' focuses mainly on Guy, this new version of it explores Lili as the main character more.
3. Character list: Lili, little Guy, and one of Lili's client
4. plot, setting, and themes.
Plot: the story starts with Little Guy starts his speech from his performance class, which creates a sense of irony and fate. Then there should be a monologue of Lili, which is about how she talks about the fact that she knows she will be the only financial support of the family and it will be even tougher than before since she is only a Haitian woman, who is only supposed to cook and take care of children. Then the scene switches to the main plot of 'the night woman'. There will be a lot of lines from that story. There will be a conversation between Lili and her client, which shows how unwilling she is to be a prostitute, but she has to do it in order to support her child's education. There will be a happy ending that talks about Little Guy finish education.
Setting and themes: I think the basic background story and the setting should be exactly the same as the original two stories since it will not confuse the audience. I want to focus more on the themes of love, struggle, hopelessness, and perseverance, which will be explored throughout the play.
5. the highlight of the performance
I think the highlight should be two parts- the start and the end of the story.
When Guy first dies, little Guy will start his speech prepared for his performance class, which immediately sets the tone of sadness.
At the end of the story, it is important to be highlighted since we need to finish it strong. There should be a crying scene of Lili in order to show her happiness.
