4 Select a passage from the concluding chapter of a novel you have chosen to study and show how acting, staging effects and design can combine to make it an effective ending for an audience.
- discuss how the how the chapter ends : How Desiree is depressed because of the news she hear about Daniel marrying Andrea. Desiree comes into Daniel’s room and thinks about stabbing him, then she gets kicked out of the hotel. The wedding begins and Desiree enters. She falls and sees Daniel ignoring her, then she is being stepped on and dies.
- the performance should focus on the scene where Desiree is suffering at the hotel when she first sees Mathilde ignores her and then Daniel ignores her. The stage should be in a black box theater where Desiree lays in the middle of the stage and Daniel on the left, Mathilde on the right.
- Lighting should be white, spot lights on the three characters. When Desiree says ‘where did I lose my red comb?’ The color of the light should be red which symbolizes both her emotion of losing the comb and the foreshadow that she is going to die soon. When she dies the light should slowly turn off in order to show the audience that the story has come to an end with the death of the Main charactre.
- acting : Both Daniel and Mathilde should look ignorant since they did ignore Desiree. Desiree should use her body language and facial expression
to show her struggle and desperation of getting help of others.
- sound effect : there should be some background noises in order to tell the audience that there are lots of people in the hotel. When the storm and lightning comes, there should be people screaming, which shows the urgency of the crowd. When the scene ends, there is a sad music being played to show the sad ending.
5. Select a passage from a novel you have chosen to study which provides an effective introduction of an important character or characters. How would you use staging, design and acting to ensure that this introduction would have dramatic importance for the audience?
Introduction of Papa Ge
There will be three characters on stage. Papa Ge, Desiree, and the narrator.
Although it is an introduction of Papa Ge, Desiree’s existence does show the audience how peasants are afraid of the god.
Papa Ge is an important charactre because he is one of the reasons that Desiree ends up dead, and this whole story is based on religious background.
Lighting: when the performance first starts where the narrator says ‘suddenly the shutters at the window flew open... not a man- a demon! His mouth gleamed red..’ because the color of red symbolizes blood and it adds some sense of danger on Papa Ge.
Staging: Papa Ge stands on a stair in order to show the higher status than Desiree.
Desiree is on her knees to show how powerless she is.
Costumes: in order to show the audience how dangerous Papa Ge is, he should wear something red and black.
Acting: Papa Ge should look both angry and arrogant. In contrast, Desiree should look frightened which also shows the power of Papa Ge.
Chapter nine where Desiree is hiding at the garden and enjoys her dress, beautiful hair and the play ground, which shows the theme of joy and innocence.
Quote of narrations: and indeed, she was lovely, with her hair smoothed out by the magic comb and planted in one thick braid that reached down her back. This shows how happy Desiree is by seeing her own beauty.
Staging: big buildings as the background where is the hotel. There should be a fake water pool to be Desiree’s playground and where she washes her hair.
Acting: with narrator at th back, Desiree should act like she is running around and laughing as if she is enjoying herself. She should jump around with a happy facial expression.
Should effect: there should be a happy music played while Desiree is playing.
All these elements show the joy and innocence of Desiree by letting her have a own playground with beautiful dress on her.
