Blog gods

As a book that strongly relates to religion background, My love my love has described the appearances of gods multiple times. In chapter 8 when Desiree is sleeping, she dreams of four gods, Agwe, Asaka, Papa Ge, and Erzulie. In this blog post, I will focus on the description of each god and how I will perform and design each of them as a character on stage.

Agwe: In the book he is described as ‘tall, beautiful, his lofty head of the richest blue-green seaweed decorated in gold-strutted back and forth as he had in the houngfor, his wicked eyes a blazing blue.’ As the description says, he is described as an arrogant god who wants to take over everything. In contrast to Desiree, who looks poor, Agwe looks well decorated with beautiful outfit, which shows his god status. On stage, I would make his costume the same as the description in order to show his arrogance with gold-yellow light on him in order to show the rich status.

Asaka: She is described as ‘sat sulking, looking drab and ragged in a brown dress’ Similar to Desiree, Asaka, as the mother of earth, is not as fancy as Agwe. I appears to me that she has a more easygoing personality. Therefore, on stage, I would use the same description of costumes in book and put warm color light such as orange on her.  As the mother of earth, I believe that Asaka does not have the will to control everybody.

Erzulie: As the god of love, Erzulie is pure and innocent. Similar to Asaka, she is also easygoing and show love to the peasants. In the book, she is described as forever lovely, paraded herself so vainly. She is like Desiree who is innocent and soft to everyone. If I were designing her character, I would make her costume all white in order to show the sense of innocence and put white light on her. Because Desiree will also have white light on, it shows that Erzulie is similar to Desiree since they both believe in love.

Papa Ge: He is the god of fear, a demon. On page 46 there is a clear description of him when he first appears. ‘A shadow appeared against the outside darkness, a shadow that become thicker, larger… his clothes as dark as the night behind him…. not a man, a demon! …bloody red… dripping with blood.’ It is obvious that in this description, the words ‘dark’ ‘black’ ‘red’ and ‘blood’ appear multiple times, which suggests that whenever Papa Ge appears in the scene, the scene will have dark elements. Though he is described as a demon, he did make a deal with Desiree and helps her. If we put this character on stage,  he costume should be either black of red in order to show the sense of bloodiness and the fear he brings to people. With red light on Papa Ge, the effect of showing blood and power can be achieved through this kind of sensation.
